What started as an off the cuff comment on Adam Lambert’s official web site, has become a reality.
When the writer of an article about Adam Lambert suggested he get back to working on songs like “Freak Flag”, I said, “Hey, we should market those”. The response was immediate and not all of it was positive. I even wrote a blog about it on August 8,2011.
Behind the scenes I have been working on making and marketing an actual FREAK FLAG. My original inspiration was from Adam’s song “Whataya Want From Me”. He sings “It’s me, I’m a freak, but thanks for loving me, cause you’re doin’ it perfectly.” Adam has made it his mission to inspire people to embrace whatever makes them unique. On almost every article or in many threads on his fan sites, there are stories of how Adam has inspired people. And his work for several charities like “DonorsChoose.org” and the “Trevor Project” as well as the “It Gets Better” campaign show his passion for helping kids who feel like he once did, “weird”.
As my design “evolved”, it actually “devolved”. The very idea of a FREAK FLAG is that each one would look different. So the words FREAK FLAG are very small, in a black, generic font and shifted to the bottom left corner. The field is a 22”x22” white bandana. The flag is ready for all of the freaks to decorate and personalize their flag any way they want. I chose the bandana as it can be hung or worn several ways. And best of all, it is for males, females and those who are a little of both. LOL And it can be for any age.
Two of my nieces, Sam and Alex, were hanging out after a Labor Day picnic at our home and I decided to bring out my “Freak Flag” prototype and explain its purpose. I was pleasantly surprised at their enthusiastic response to it. They thought it was a really cool idea. Since I needed some FREAK FLAGS made up for marketing, I said I would be passing them out to family and friends to decorate. Then Alex said the magic words, “We can have a FREAK FLAG decorating party”. Well this opened up a whole new world. The world (just said “Brave New World” on Jeopardy) is of kid’s birthday parties. The party hostess (a.k.a. “Mom”) would purchase paints, glue, gems and glitter and start by helping the kids print their name in the center. Then they could add hand prints and anything else their creative brains come up with. Now they have a cool item to take home from the party instead of a bag of sugar and crap that can be hung (just said “hung from a wall” on TV) in their rooms or worn.
Preteens and adults could start with a photograph of themselves or a favorite idol (mine is Adam Lambert) made into a transfer. I just realized that a pillow could be made from these and then my mind went straight into the gutter. LOL
The real beauty of these FREAK FLAGS is the price, only “SIX BUCK$” and it includes shipping.
